SEASIDE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Mare Nostrum or the Mediterranean Sea, a place of stories, legends, pirates, corsairs, merchants and ancestral civilizations… and in the middle: Ciutat de Mallorques, the gathering point of thousand nationalities.

Since time immemorial, Mallorca, and mostly the city of Palma, has been one of the most important trade hubs of the Balearic archipelago, it was considered one of the most notable harbours in Europe and into the Mediterranean Sea during the Middle and Modern Age thanks to its perfect location into the western Mediterranean Sea; for that reason, all the buildings and professions are related to the sea.

This neighbourhood is known as Puig de Sant Pere (figuring in documents since the 11th century), after the conquest and the division of the lands in 1230, it belonged to the bishop of Barcelona Berenguer de Palou, one of the rich magnate of the conquest.

One of the main buildings of this picturesque neighbourhood is Es Baluard, an old bastion and nowadays the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum of Palma. This bastion formed part of the renaissance walled enclosure from the 16th century and it was built by Giovanni Battista Calvi. Until 1952 it was a military area, and a few years later passed into private ownership. The new owners planned to construct buildings throughout the whole area, but thanks to people’s pressure the bulwark was declared a historical and artistic site in 1965.

Another indispensable monument is the Lonja, the Headquarter of the merchant’s guild, one of the most powerful groups of the city. The architect was Guillem Sagrera and it is considered of the civil Gothic buildings of the 15th century most spectacular of the island.

Also, in this district, it was located the Consolat de Mar, the Royal Consulate of the Sea and the Land. It’s a medieval institution that made the trade laws, manage the sea business and where all the issues between merchants and buyers were solved. Since 1983, it is the Headquarter of the Government of the Balearic Islands and it is run by Francina Armengol (PSIB-PSOE). And the famous alfondecs inns and guesthouses where merchants from everywhere could sleep, eat, rest and use them as a warehouse, trade centre or shop.

A district full of life and splendour, but it broke down into the economic and financial crisis and step by step it got abandoned and deteriorated, then it became a marginal quarter of the capital until the beginning of the 21st Century when gradually this district has reborn again.
