Guided Tour Mallorca museums

Historical military museum of San Carlos:

Since ancient times, the Portopí bay has been important as the first port of the Gulf of Palma. During the Middle Ages, maritime trade was punished by pirates and corsairs, who came to attack Portopí despite the five towers that defended it. To protect the port and the city of Palma, the castle or fortress of San Carlos was built to add fire from its cannons to those of the Cap del Moll tower that was located at the foot of the maritime front of the city wall of Palma.
In 1991, from the units of the Balearic Military Zone and private donations, the Castle Museum of San Carlos was finally inaugurated. The museum contains material mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as a section dedicated to the Majorcan general Valeriano Weyler. From the previous era, there is a remarkable collection of spherical stone bullets from the artillery companies of the Kingdom of Mallorca, coming from the Almudí (workshops of Palma).

It is the centre of worship of thousands of visitors who come to contemplate the pictorial and sculptural legacy of that genius.

Joan Miró and his wife, Pilar Juncosa, who also gives name to the Foundation. They donated to the city of Palma the Son Boter workshops and the workshop built by J. L. Sert in 1981.

Years later in 1992, the new building that houses the art collection was built by the architect Rafael Moneo and was added as the headquarters of the Foundation.

Es Baluard, Palma Modern and Contemporary art museum:

Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma is located on the perimeter of the bastion of Sant Pere, which forms part of the Renaissance walled enclosure that surrounded the city of Palma until the early 20th century.

The main building was designed in 2003 by Lluís García-Ruiz, Jaume García-Ruiz, Vicente Tomás and Ángel Sánchez Cantalejo. It has a total surface area of 5,027 m², of which 2,500 are purposed for exhibition spaces. The museum is divided into three storeys that connect to the outside, with the walls and to each other via ramps, skylights and large interior balconies, in pursuit of the idea of an interior street.

Defined by simple, clean lines, the museum building is entirely respectful of the heritage and historical environment that surrounds and accommodates it; it integrates perfectly into the profile of the Renaissance bastion. The dialogue between the contemporary architecture of the new building and the ancient wall is present at all times and is constant, and one realises this as one moves through the different spaces in the museum. The project seeks to integrate modern construction and respect the ancient heritage of the walls, and at the same time be a differentiating element. Which is why materials like concrete and glass were used, allowing one to perfectly distinguish the two types of construction.

Palau March:

In the Palau March, a part of the Foundation’s excellent collection of modern and contemporary sculpture is contemplated. The group gathered reflects, on one hand, the defined personal taste of the collector, and on the other the majority of trends that have marked the history of 20th-century sculpture.

Works of established international artists are completed with those of Spain with international prestige.

The variety of materials granite, marble, bronze, iron, steel, etc. but also textures, colours and shapes transform the space chosen for the exhibition is a powerful and suggestive art garden.
